The capital of Shaanxi province and also one of the oldest cities in China, Xi’an is a heady mix of history, culture, and modernism. It was called “Chang’an” in ancient times which means “perpetual peace”. It has been home to many dynasties like Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang. The famous Bingmayong or the terra cotta army was found here, which is one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. You can find pretty reproductions of these terracotta army figurines in local shops. Xi’an comes under the top 2 cities in China as a tourist attraction. It is the eastern end of the Silk Road and has been the capital of 13 Chinese empires. It is not just a place for history lovers but also a gourmet delight with its Cantonese and spicy Sichuan style food. Roaming around the city one can have a dekko of its ancient walls which have been well preserved.

Tip:  If you want to drench in ethnicity then visiting Xi’an in September when it’s Xian Ancient Culture Art Festival. It’s a spectacular amalgam of folk-art essences, operas, and rich colorful activities.

What to see in Xi’an?

In Xi’an, if you are not soaking up its history then you can soak up its natural beauty. They have 4 touring lines called the east, west, north and south lines, each of them with their unique charming places to see. The very first place would surely be the Terracotta warriors and the Horse museum which was found by a farmer in 1974 while digging a well. 

You can marvel at the Ming city wall which has 13 dynasties depicted on it. The Bell and Drum tower dating back to the Ming dynasty display the culture of that era. On top of the tower, you get a panoramic view of the whole city. Big goose Pagoda is a beautiful Buddhist temple where you will be mystified by the chanting of monks. This was built in the Tang dynasty.

You can end your day with a dazzling song and dance performance reminding you of the Tang dynasty. This happens at Shaanxi Song & Dance Theatre and Tang Dynasty Palace.

Tip:  Xi’an is seen best by walking amongst the locals. A bike is a great way to travel around so are its buses. 

Shop and Dine in Xi’an:

Muslim street is the main food street in Xi’an. It is also called Huimin street. One must have the famous Xi’an dumplings and cold noodles here.

To shop for the local arts and crafts one can go to Shu Yuan Men street which is full of antiques and paintings. To buy silk clothing, jade articles, and jewels Wenbaozhai Tourist Shopping Center is the place to go.

Tip: If you eat beef or lamb then you must try Roujiamo, a specialty of Xi’an. It is a freshly bakes bun stuffed with marinated beef or lamb.
