Yangon, also commonly called Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar and is the capital of the Yangon Region. The name of the city is derived from the Burmese words ‘yan’ and ‘koun’ and this word combination is commonly translated as ‘End of Strife’. It is the most populous city with 7 million inhabitants and is a significant commercial centre. It has the most colonial-era buildings in Southeast Asia and also has an urban core which is of a unique colonial era and is still extraordinarily intact.

Tip: The city has a tropical monsoon climate and it is mostly warm and humid all year so visitors are advised to be prepared for the place accordingly.

Getting to Yangon

Yangon International Airport (RGN) is approximately at a distance of 10 km from the city and it takes about 18 minutes to reach the city from the airport. What to do in Yangon

Myanmar used to be a British Colony and the colonial architecture is still maintained by the government to be admired by visitors and locals alike. The best examples are the Strand Hotel and the old Yangon Railway Station. There are several pagodas like the Shwedagon Pagoda which is one of the most famous pagodas, the Sule Pagoda which was built some 2,500 years ago and the unique part of it is that it is located in the middle of a rather modern part of town, the Botataung Pagoda is also called ‘1,000 soldiers’ which was built for 1,000 military leaders in Myanmar to honour them, the Kaba Aye Pagoda which has a Buddha centrepiece made of silver, the Maha Wizaya Pagoda, and the Swe Taw Myat Pagoda which is the nicest one in Myanmar and is made of gold leaf and white stucco which glows in the afternoon sun. There is also the Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple which is known for having a statue of a reclining Buddha which is 217 foot long and is one of the largest in Myanmar. In Yangon Lake also called Kandawgyi Lake travellers can feed resident catfish and participate in a quirky local activity and from Kandawgyi Park visitors can admire the enormous golden dragon boat which is situated on the lake. For history enthusiasts, there is Martyrs’ Mausoleum and the Bahadur Shah Zafar Grave which was the resting place of the last Mughal emperor of India and is on Zi Wa Ka Street.

Tip: One of the best modes of transportation in Yangon is through their taxis and the other way is through private buses and trishaws (only used in markets).

Where to Stay

Downtown Yangon is one of the best places for travellers to stay in a majority of the sights including the pagodas, shopping, hotels and riverside area is centred around this area making it a convenient commute as most places are at a walking distance. Bahan Township is also a great area to stay in as it is very close to Kandawgyi Lake and Park and also has several classic street food establishments to first-rate restaurants that have a wide variety of culinary options suitable to all types of tastes. Chinatown is again an excellent area to stay in as it has several attractions of its own along with being at a walkable distance to most of the attractions of Downtown Yangon.
