Ho Chi Minh City, also commonly known as Saigon is located in southeastern Vietnam and the metropolitan area surrounds the Saigon River. It was the capital of the Republic of Vietnam, mainly known as South Vietnam from 1955 to 1975. The name of the city was adopted in 1976 and the official name ‘Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh’ commemorates Ho Chi Minh, the first leader of North Vietnam. It is the financial centre of Vietnam and is the home of the largest stock exchange in all of Vietnam.

Getting to Ho Chi Minh

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is at a mere distance of about 7 km from the city, and it takes about 15 minutes to reach the city from the airport. What to do in Ho Chi Minh

Ho Chi Minh City is a place that is steeped in rich cultural history and some of the most important modern history where references to this can be found around every corner. The influences of Buddhism can be seen in Giac Lam Pagoda, which is the oldest temple of the city, Phoc An Hoi Quan Pagoda which is the prettiest, and Jade Emperor Pagoda which is the fanciest. For modern history enthusiasts, there is the War Remnants Museum which shows the atrocities committed during the Vietnam War and has Huey helicopters and M48 Patton tanks, along with the History Museum which speaks for itself and Cu Chi tunnels which were used during the Tet Offensive in 1968 by the Vietcong guerillas. There is also a Bonsai River Cruise that lets you admire the city from a vantage point of water. There are innumerable places that are both rich culturally and historically like Central Office, Cao Dai Temple, Tour Reunification Palace and Notre Dame Cathedral which was built from 1877 and 1883 and sits in the heart of the city.

Tip: The best way to get around the city is through buses, taxis or motorcycle taxis, cyclos, and bicycle or motorbike rentals so it would be preferable to make arrangements for transport beforehand.

Where to Stay

Nguyen Hue/Dong Khoi is the heart of District 1 and is one of the best areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh City has there are local highlights, a variety of cafes and restaurants nearby at a walking distance and there are also several luxury hotels modern hotels. However, the prices are a bit higher since it is the absolute centre of the city. Ben Thanh Market is also a good area to stay in and is located in District 1 itself and has several moderately prices hotels and is although not as showy an area as Dong Khoi but it still offers a unique, although busy and crowded experience. Pham Ngu Lao /Bui Vien offers many cheap hotels and hostels and is also commonly known as a backpacker’s district. Travellers can also choose to stay in District 3 for a more authentic Vietnamese feel and is great for people on a stricter budget and it is also close to the centre of the city.
