What to eat

There are several mouthwatering Isan dishes that are a must-try for all who visit Buri Ram starting with Tom Saep which is like a Tom Yum soup except that it doesn’t have coconut milk but is also a clear hot and sour soup. It mainly made of water or broth with an abundance of Thai herbs like basil, lemongrass, ginger, garlic and kaffir lime leaves with the choice of adding meat on a bone or seafood for non-vegetarians and a lot of mushrooms for vegetarians which are cooked or boiled together with some fresh chillies added in the end. There is Miang Kham which is a traditional dish famous in Laos and the northeastern part of Thailand and has shallots, bird’s eye chilli peppers, ginger, garlic, lime, peanuts, dried shrimps and roasted coconut which are then stuffed together in a Piper sarmentosum leaf with a special sauce added at the end. Gai Yang, which is essentially roasted chicken as this where roasted chicken originated from is found throughout streets and markets.
