Admire the clear blue waters and the temples and wonderful scenery which surround Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan's largest body of water. Then, head to the historic town of Lukang (Lugang) on Taiwan's west coast where you can take a walk through history in narrow alleys lined with beautiful traditional buildings, visit some of the best temples in Taiwan and taste some traditional snacks with a local twist.


Day 1 Taipei-Sun Moon Lake

8:00-8:30 a.m. Taipei downtown hotel pickup and driven to Sun Moon Lake. (about 3.5 hours)

Lunch timings are flexible and will be arranged with your guide (at your own expense).

12:00 p.m. Sun Moon Lake (Rì Yuè Tán, 日月潭) (about 4 hours)

Arrive at Sun Moon Lake which is located at an altitude of 762 m (2,500 ft) above sea level in the lofty mountains of central Taiwan's Nantou County. Famous for its clear blue waters and wonderful mountainous backdrop, this is Taiwan's largest body of water. It's also home to the Thao tribe, one of Taiwan's indigenous ethnic groups, and has been a center of local aboriginal culture for 1,000s of years.

Tour the lake area and stop at sights including the famous Wenwu Temple, also known as the "literature and warrior temple," which is dedicated to Confucius and Kuan Ti. Climb to the top of the 46 m (151 ft) high Tse-en Pagoda (Ci En Pagoda), built by Chiang Kai-shek in memory of his mother, for fabulous panoramic views of the lake's surrounds.

5:30 p.m. Transfer to hotel

Stay overnight at the Sun Moon Lake Hotel or similar.

Day 2 Sun Moon Lake-Lukang-Taipei (includes breakfast)

After breakfast, you'll be picked up from your hotel and driven to Lukang. (about 1.5 hours)

10:00 a.m. Lukang (Lùgǎng, 鹿港) (about 4 hours)

The town of Lukang, located on Taiwan's west coast, was an important sea port during the 18th and 19th centuries and is now famous for its numerous temples—some of the oldest and best in Taiwan, as well as its well-preserved heritage buildings and winding alleys. Take a tour through this living museum, visit the Mazu Temple and the Longshan Temple and imagine what life was like here during its heyday. Don't miss red-tiled Old Market Street which is lined with wooden houses and shops. Here you can pick up some souvenirs, try some traditional snacks including oyster pancakes and ox tongue cakes or simply admire the wonderful carved doors and windows on the building facades.

Lunch timings are flexible and will be arranged with your guide (at your own expense).

2:30 p.m. Depart for Taipei. (Note: Subject to the availability of train tickets, we will return to Taipei by train or bus.)

Important Notes

1.Please call or email Ctrip if you need to cancel your booking. If you cancel at least 30 days prior to the scheduled departure, there is no cancellation fee. If you cancel between 15 and 30 days prior, there is a 30% cancellation fee. If you cancel between 6 and 14 days prior, there is a 50% cancellation fee. If you cancel within 5 days prior, there is a 100% cancellation fee.

2.On departure date we will pick you up from downtown hotel. You will be contacted before 11:00 p.m. the day before your scheduled activity to confirm pickup information regarding your driver and/or tour guide.

3.Currently payment is only accepted by credit card. Once payment clears, Ctrip will send you a confirmation email with your booking details. If payment fails, your booking will automatically be canceled. To ensure a smooth payment process, we recommend you contact your credit card provider in advance.

4.Time arrangements described in itineraries are subject to change. Guides reserve the right to change arrangements according to weather, transportation and other variable conditions.

5.If you opt to join only part of this activity, you forfeit the right to join subsequent parts, as well as the right to receive a refund for any part of the activity that you miss.

6.All listed meals are Chinese food unless otherwise noted. Please notify us ahead of time for any dietary restrictions (allergies, vegetarian, kosher, etc.).

7.By default 2 people will share a room. For groups of odd numbers, 3 people will be required to share a room unless single supplement is paid. To request a single room, please make a note in the "additional request" section while booking online or inform us by email at thingstodo@ctrip.com.

8.Children (2-11 years old and less than 1.4m tall) are entitled to a discount. Children under 12 years old but over 1.4 m in height may be required to pay an additional fee on site.

9.Please ensure personal and travel information is entered correctly. Ctrip will not refund any losses that result from incorrect and missing information.
