Lijiang Ancient Town (大研古城)
When people talk about Lijiang old town, they're usually referring to Dayan. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Lijiang old town, also includes the nearby villages of Baisha and Shuhe as well as Dayan. This area survived a 1996 earthquake that leveled most of the modern buildings in town. In the wake of the disaster, Dayan gained fame as a quaint and authentic outpost of Yunnan culture and architecture and went from backpacker secret to tour package feature.
Yulong Xue Shan (玉龙雪山)
An impressive sight, especially with Black Dragon Pool in the foreground, Yulong Xue Shan, or "Jade Dragon Snow Mountain," is actually a 13-peak massif that forms one wall of Tiger Leaping Gorge and whose tallest peak, Shanzidou, rises 5,596 m (18,359 ft) above sea level. The range is home to one of the Northern Hemisphere's southernmost glaciers as well as a wide range of flora and fauna, much of it unique to the region.
Impression Lijiang Show (印象丽江)
Another spectacular by Hero (200－director Zhang Yimou (like his Impression: Liu Sanjie in Yangshuo, and the more recent Impression, West Lake in Hangzhou), Impression Lijiang Show is an all-singing, all-dancing celebration of local culture. Featuring more than 500 actors, 100 horses, and put on at a reputed cost of US$31m, the show takes place inside the spectacular Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Park, some 3,500 m (11,500 ft) above sea level.
Baisha Frescoes (白沙壁画)
Baisha, a charming Naxi town some 8 km (5 mi) north of Lijiang, is home to the best remaining frescoes, and the town is worth a visit on its other merits. Baisha, which was actually the capital of a Naxi kingdom prior to absorption into China, makes for a great day trip from Lijiang; most visitors arrive by bicycle after a pleasant ride that takes about an hour. It's also part of the Lijiang Old Town UNESCO World Heritage site along with Dayan and Shuhe.
Shuhe Ancient Town (束河)
Shuhe is a small Naxi village on the outskirts of Lijiang at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Slate-paved streets, beautiful old wooden and stone buildings with traditional Naxi-style upturned eaves create a peaceful and charming atmosphere that is often considerably more relaxed than that found in the more heavily trafficked Daya.
First Bend in the Yangtze River (长江第一湾)
At the First Bend in the Yangtze River, the south-running waters suddenly turn back north because of a massive V-shape in the nearby mountain range. The fertile soil deposited by the river drew people to the area and the village of Shigu (石鼓) came into being. This town has been an important stop on the trade route between Yunnan and Tibet and a meeting point for local peoples for centuries. Tibetans bring their quality fell, hide and herbal medicine to market and take back necessities like salt, tea and cloth. Several times a month, the still active market makes little Shigu into a lively place as traders come into town.
Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡)
A thin, winding trail hugs the side of the Haba Xue Shan (哈巴雪山) range as the white-capped waters of the Jinsha River (Jīnshā Jiāng, 金沙江; part of the Yangtze River) swirl far below and the steep mountain slope and craggy peaks of the Yulong Xue Shan range rise on the other side. The trek along the high trail (essentially the only trail since the lower trail was paved) starts near Qiaotou (桥头) and goes up and down the side of the mountains until it descends again at the far side near Middle Tiger Leaping Stone (中虎跳石). Hiking the trail will tire any traveler, especially sections like the upward-climbing 24 Bends (24道拐) and takes about two days from one far end to the other.
Geden Songzanlin Monastery (松赞林寺)
Located at the foot of Foping Mountain (佛屏山) just near Zhongdian, Songzanlin Temple, also known as the Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, is the largest Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, and is modeled closely on the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Originally built in 1679, the Songzanlin complex, ordained and inhabited by the fifth Dalai Lama, sits at an elevation of 3,300 m (10,827 ft) and boasts three temples and an eight-meter-high statue of Sakyamuni. Home to some 700 Tibetan Buddhist monks, Songzanlin was severely damaged during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). The majority of the temple has since been restored.
Pudacuo National Park (普达措国家公园)
Welcome to another China, one embodied in Yunnan's vast Pudacuo National Park, established in June, 2007 as the first in a planned series of parks designed to meet the meet the exacting standards set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Sprawling across 1,295 km2 of flora and fauna, Pudacuo is home to over 100 endangered species living in a landscape of mountains, forests and lakes reclaimed from private developers and turned into a model of environmental stewardship with the help of the Nature Conservancy.
