Jingjiang Palace (靖江王城)
Located in central Guilin, originally served as the official residence of Zhu Shouqian, the Prince of Jingjiang and great nephew of the first Ming emperor. This vast residential complex, enclosed by an imposing wall and huge gates, is characterized by red-walled and yellow-tiled buildings. Built in 1372 at the foot of Guilin's well-known Solitary Beauty Peak, the complex housed 14 princes from 12 generations until the end of the Ming Dynasty, but is now a campus of Guangxi Normal University. Check out the main sights including Chengyun Hall and Zhuangyuan Arch and get fabulous views of Guilin from the peak.
Banyan Lake and Fir Lake (榕杉湖)
Once protected the city and its people from hostile intruders. Today, it's simply a beautiful place to relax and enjoy some of Guilin's most beautiful views.
Longji rice terraces (龙脊梯田)
The ingenious Longji rice terraces have been built up on the ridges between the river and mountaintops over centuries, rising nearly 500 meters at the highest point. In Chinese "Longji" means "Dragon's Backbone". The coiling line spirals up the mountain like an enormous dragon, making the most of limited arable land and water resources. The Terraces date all the way back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368 AD).
Dong villages (程阳八寨)
After breakfast, visit some of the eight well-preserved Dong villages which dot the countryside, see the traditional wooden houses and get an insight into this unique culture. You'll also watch Duoya and Reed-pipe dances performed by the locals.
Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge (程阳风雨桥)
It was built in the early 20th century, mostly of wood and stone. Exhibiting a high level of architectural design, this nail-less covered bridge is 78 m (256 ft) long, and features a long covered corridor, five pavilions, 19 verandahs and five stone piers. One of 100 such bridges in the region, its architecture is typical of bridges built by the Dong.
Drum towers (三江鼓楼)
These are one of the most distinctive features of Dong villages. These pagoda-shaped multi-level wooden structures are built without nails or bolts and feature upturned eves carved with characters or images. As the name suggests, these structures house a drum, but also serve as multi-functional meeting places for the village inhabitants. Visit a drum tower in one of the region's villages and admire its unique architecture.
Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山)
One of the most famous is Guilin's Elephant Trunk Hill, a striking natural arch that juts out into the Li River, bearing a clear resemblance to an elephant dipping its trunk into the water.
Seven Star Park (七星公园)
A great place for a relaxing stroll, ancient Seven Star Park takes its name from seven karst peaks that correspond to the seven stars in the Big Dipper constellation. Covering 1.2 km sq (0.5 sq mi), the park's rocky landscape is riddled with a number of natural grottos and caves. Seven Star cave and Dark Dragon cave are two of the most popular, known for their impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
Yao Mountain (尧山)
Located on the eastern outskirts of the city, at 903 m (2,963 ft), Yao Mountain is Guilin's highest mountain. Famous for its scenery which changes color with the seasons, the mountain is also home to a number of sites including the Yao Temple, White Deer Temple and Tianci Field. Head to the summit via cablecar, look out for the huge natural reclining Buddha and enjoy the fabulous views which take in both sides of the Li River.
Reed Flute Cave (芦笛岩)
Reed Flute Cave is just a 15 to 20 minute drive northwest of the downtown area. The cave's serpentine depths wind about within Guangming Mountain and feature some remarkable rock formations.
Guilin–Yangshuo Li-River Cruise (漓江游船)
There's no better way to experience the incredible karst mountain vistas of Guilin than a boat trip to Yangshuo. A Li Li-River Cruise takes between three and five hours and offers a chance to take in Guilin, Xingping and Yangshuo's spectacular scenery in a relaxed setting. Guests are free to walk about the boat and admire the scenery from any angle they desire. Most boats have a restaurant floor at water level and a sightseeing deck above that. A packed lunch will be served on board.
West Street (西街)
West Street is Yangshuo's primary tourist magnet. This cobbled street of wooden shop fronts and laziness-inducing restaurants is bursting with a quaint charm that attracts visitors from around the globe. Although recently renovated to cope with the ever-increasing tourist foot and bicycle traffic, the street still retains its an old China charm.
