8:00 a.m. Chengdu downtown hotel pickup

9:00 a.m. Giant Panda Breeding Research Base (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) (about 3 hours)

The Giant Panda Breeding Research Base is home to over 80 of China's iconic pandas. Most are of the familiar black and white variety, but the Base is also home to a number of the smaller, lesser-known red pandas. You'll view the animals eating and at play in a carefully maintained habitat that is as close to their natural environment as possible. You'll also learn how scientists and ecologists are working to protect the few remaining wild pandas and expand the captive population. On that last note, over 100 bears have been born at the Base since 1987.The Base became even more important after the Sichuan earthquake of 2008, with eight bears sent here from the badly damaged Wolong reserve. Your visit provides both moral and financial support for the ongoing conservation effort.

12:30 p.m. Lunch at a local restaurant (lunch is not included and you will have a number of options to choose from).

2:30 p.m. Qingyang Temple (Qīngyáng Gōng, 青羊宫) (about 3 hours)

One of the first Taoist temples allowed to reopen by the government in 1983, Qingyang Temple was originally built during the Zhou Dynasty (1040-221BC). It was later expanded after the Taoists gave the Tang Emperor refuge during the Huangchao Rebellion.

Taiji is closely associated with Taoist meditation making Qingyang Temple an ideal place to practice this form of traditional Chinese martial art. You'll meet up with a famous local Taiji Master who will introduce you to the National Standard 24 Form Taijiquan. You'll want to warm up a little before starting your practice with some simple stretching or walking. Move to a quiet court-yard inside the temple to practice the moves with the Taiji with Master with a 15-minute break.

6:00 p.m. Stay overnight at the Xiangyang Hotel or similar.

Day 2 Chengdu (includes Breakfast/lunch)

7:30 a.m. Taiji practice at People's Park (about 2 hours)

After an early breakfast you'll depart from the hotel and head to People's Park (Rénmín Gōngyuán, 人民公园) for some early morning Taiji practice. Like many Chinese parks, Chengdu's People's Park is filled with song and dance and people just enjoying life. It also boasts one of Sichuan's most quintessential and well-loved outdoor tea-houses.

Practise Taiji with the Taiji master—at this early hour you'll be one among many Taiji enthusiasts and surrounded by lovers of other martial arts and minority dances.

10:00 a.m. Wet market & local family visit (about 2 hours)

Your local host will meet you at the park and the second part of your tour will begin as you head to the wet market. Your host will show you around the market, introducing you to Sichuan's local ingredients and specialties, including spices, doufu products, cured meats and dozens of different kinds of sichuan pickles. Then drive to your host's family home where you'll put some of those delicious ingredients to use cooking some traditional Sichuan-style dishes. Alongside your host, you'll learn to prepare and then cook some local dishes.
