10:00 a.m.Zhujiajiao water town (Zhūjiājiǎo, 朱家角) (about 2 hours)

A picturesque water town situated just outside Shanghai, Zhujiajiao is a maze of beautiful waterways, charming stone bridges, ancient cobbled streets and historic Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasty architecture. Its best-known attractions including Fangsheng Bridge, Daqing Post Office and Kezhi Garden. Fangsheng Bridge (built in 1571) is the longest, largest and tallest stone bridge in Zhujiajiao and in the greater Shanghai region. It is famous for its exquisitely carved Dragon Gate Stone–a totemic marker that sits atop the bridge. After enjoying the town on foot, you can also hop aboard a small boat and take to the water. There's no better way to enjoy the view of a perfect Chinese water town.

12:00 p.m. Lunch at a local restaurant

1:30 p.m. the Bund (Wàitān, 外滩) (about 1 hour)

One of Shanghai's most recognizable destinations, the Bund is known for its impressive array of foreign concession-era Art Deco and neoclassical architecture, fusing both Western and Chinese characteristics. The Bund also offers breathtaking views of Pudong's towering and simply astonishing skyline; a seemingly stunning contrast of past and present Shanghai. You will walk the Garden Bridge from the Bund Bull and wander around Huangpu Park, learning about the Bund's history and the New Pudong District from the guide at hand.

2:30 p.m. French Concession (Fǎ Zūjiè, 法租界) (about 1 hour)

The former French Concession is, for many visitors, the highlight of a visit to Shanghai, delivering much of what this fabled city promises. It's also become the city's hottest and hippest neighborhood, where trendy bars and clubs multiply like mushrooms after a rainstorm. Shanghai's idiosyncratic push-pull between new and old, development and preservation, takes a special form in the French Concession, making it an absolutely unique urban experience.

3:30 p.m. People's Square (Rénmín Guǎngchǎng, 人民广场) (about 1 hour)

People's Square, like much of today's Shanghai, is a showcase. Fortunately, it's also home to beautifully maintained gardens and parkscapes, culminating in People's Park, which occupies the northeastern quadrant of this massive tract of land in the middle of Puxi (the west bank of the Huangpu River).

6:00 p.m. Return to hotel

* Please note: 2 shopping stops (silk & traditional Chinese medicine) will be arranged during the trip, about 30 minutes each.
