Best bits: Wildlife is all around you. So much to hear and see. Loved the spider monkeys. Excursion on the river and canals: so much wild life including basilisks, caimans, iguanas and an immense array of bird life Excursion to the volcanic look out : more wild life including howler monkeys and bats plus a great view of Tortugeuro. Guides are knowledgeable and engaging and with eagle eyes to spot wildlife. Pool area Less good: The rooms are not very private since the walls of your room don’t reach the ceiling so the other three adjoining rooms share the same roof space so you can hear your neighbours!

5 stars for location and wildlife but for me, accommodation would be 3 stars. We had fabulous walks with Daniel, he showed us Toucans, Cayman, monkeys, many birds and even poison dart frogs. The extra walk up the local hill was well worth the cost ($38), the view was amazing. A trip to Tortugueiro was interesting. The resort is a bit regimented but this is necessary to allow for so many people to check in and depart on the various trips. Dining was canteenish but food was ok, serving staff appear quite unhappy. The pool and bar are pleasant. The cabins are a bit primitive but everything works and the WiFi is OK unless you're in a distant room. We thought that overall this was a fabulous place to visit and tremendous value.

Upon check in, lots of information about tour, meeting times and meal times. Would have been helpful if this information was provided in writing (or post meal times in the lobby) but understandable with the sustainability focus of the lodge. Rooms were clean, loved the provided soap and shampoo in the shower, although a bit watered down. Rooms lacked privacy due to shared walls not going all the way to the ceiling (better for air flow). Only screens on the windows. It was oppressively hot and humid during our visit so sleeping was uncomfortable without AC. Tour groups were much too large-hard to hear and slow pace. Meals were repetitive but fine. Pool was nice and lots of places to sit and enjoy the view. Overall it was a good visit, guides were knowledgeable.

We stayed for 2 nights in September. This was our first time here and have no lodging experience at Tortuguero to compare to. We enjoyed our time exploring the jungle and spotting wildlife. It was definitely not the most luxurious lodge we have stayed at, but the Pachira Lodge - not unlike Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge - definitely puts you in the midst of the natural wonders that Tortuguero has to offer. With regards to staying at Pachira Lodge: Highlights: - Tropical rainforest experience starts right at your doorstep (actually even on the way there once on the water taxi) - Surrounded by jungle within the lodge grounds - Amazing wildlife, especially for birders, on lodge grounds as well as out in the national park - Depending on the timing, an opportunity to witness sea turtles laying eggs and even hatchlings emerge Know that: - expect to spend at least 1/2 day traveling to/from Tortuguero by road and river; recommend spending at least 2 nights - tropical rainforest experience starts right at your doorstep; heat, humidity, noise of the surrounding tropical forest - no air-conditioning on the property; this is an understandable and ecologically sensible approach given the relatively isolated location - food is adequate but definitely not a highlight of the stay - wifi strongest next to the reception and dining areas, spotty at best elsewhere on property Unless you fly in from San Jose you will find it takes half a day to make it to Tortuguero. You start with a bus ride out of the capital city, take a lunch break en route, then transfer at La Pavona (Embarcadero a Tortuguero) onto a variety of water taxis that take you downstream along the Suerte River through the tropical rainforest. You eventually make through to the national park and the namesake town. It is not an easy trip but it definitely worth the effort. Even so, on just the ride down the Suerte River we spotted egrets, a large American crocodile basking on the bank of the river, an Anhinga drying out its wings, hanging nests of the Montezuma orependola. On the way back we spotted a white-tailed deer in the water; it did not look distressed and eventually jumped out and disappeared into the jungle. Pachira Lodge lies on a ***** of land between the Suerte River to its west and faces onto the wide Tortuguero Lagoon across to another ***** of land that separates the lagoon from the Caribbean Sea. One crossed the lagoon to reach beach where the sea turtles lay their eggs as well as the small town of Tortuguero. We were greeted with glasses of chilled fruit juice which was much appreciated. We had arrived with a tour group from Spain and The were quickly divided into Spanish-speaking and English-speaking groups for orientation, one naturalist/ guide was assigned to our group but he would often exchange roles and even join him at times (see below for more details). The intro took place at the bar by the pool and lagoon. There was a larger building on the other side or the l

I think perhaps the Tortuguero experience was just not for us. The park is beautiful, and we loved the netted windows of our room that allowed us to hear the river and forest noises all night. Pachira has a nice central pool and bar area that is possibly better for seeing wildlife than the park itself - loads of montezumas and spider monkeys around. The river safari was ok, though again lots of other people and big boats. I don’t recommend the extra excursion offered to Tortuga Hill, it was fine but too late on in the day to see much wildlife and the price point of 38 USD pp. felt a lot for what it was. Our guide was great, but the lodge staff all seemed really fed up - I don’t expect people to fall over themselves in excitement at serving me, but when the majority of staff seem deeply disgruntled it sets alarm bells ringing. The general atmosphere was, as some others have described, a bit like being at a weird holiday camp. You have to sit at the same table every night (no upstairs seats for us!) and have buffet food eked out to you by the unhappy staff (food is terrible, if you are strict veggie or vegan take snacks!). You get sent places in very large groups and it all just feels a bit packaged and sterile? This was our first stop in CR and I think with the benefit of hindsight we would have skipped this trip. Large groups are kind of the set up throughout, but we saw so much more wildlife in Corcovado and had a much better remote stay experience at a similar price point. It’s fine but steel yourself for huge groups and I think you pay a lot for what you get.

The experience starts with a stunning 90 minute boat trip up the Caribbean Canals. We were greeted with a welcome drink our room keys and lunch. Our room was lovely and more modern than we were expecting. It's in the rain forest with a ceiling fan but no air conditioning so very warm during the day but cool enough to sleep easily at night. The food was fresh, warm and plentiful. But as mentioned in other reviews it's set up for tour groups so its not fine dining and can be quite busy. There loads of wildlife around the grounds the Spider Monkeys were fun to watch and we were fortunate enough to have a Sloth in the trees by our room for the 2 days we were there. Went on a dawn river trip one morning it was amazing our boat pilot took us down lots of little back waters an obviously new the areas where the wildlife was. Woken early on the second morning by heavy rain. It stopped at 5am so I went and sat on the Dock and watch the sun come up for an hour. Which was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Overall we had an amazing stay and were sad that we only stayed 2 days.

A lovely eco-stay in the Costa Rican rainforest! Pachira Lodge is perfectly placed just across the water from Tortuguero town so you can hear the waves of the Caribbean lapping (or in our case crashing, the rain was certainly put into rainforest!) on the lovely beach, such a soothing sound. The rooms are clusters of bungalows up on stilts and make for a lovely walk through the jungle to your room. We saw lots of wildlife here just outside our room and also on the little forest trail - crabs, lizards, monkeys, armadillo, snakes and sloths to name a few. Rooms are basic but have everything you need, including lovely toiletries. There’s no glass in the windows which does make everything a little damp from the humidity (and difficult to dry clothes!) but it’s so wonderful laying in bed listening to the sounds of the rainforest! Thankfully our neighbours were quiet so we didn’t hear too much from them. The only noisy neighbours we had were the howler monkeys being our alarm clock! The pool was a perfect temperature for a refreshing dip, and the mocktails at the bar a great way to spend an afternoon when the sun came out. A couple of small ******* with poor organisation on our arrival and the bathroom trash can not being emptied from the previous guests but nothing that had a major impact on our stay!

Afraid I have to largely agree with Brenda. An odd contrast between butlins situated in paradise. Our cabin was fine, clean and tidy with a good bathroom. Odd with no glass but it is situated in the rain forest. Right on the canal which is superb. But any hope of 4 star is draggec down by the dining. Basically a budget canteen, if you like rice and chicken you’ll love it. Disinterested staff slopping mediocre mush on plates after a miserable queue. 2/3 star at best. And what a missed opportunity to make money. Help yourself to water but if you want anything else, beer or wine you have to go beg. The bar is no better often unmanned! And you have to sit in your tour guide groups on shared tables that aren’t even laid. Perhaps I’m a hotel snob!! Really strange. Moneyed travellers with their pockets bulging with $’s you would think they would have buckets everywhere ready to suck them up but no the exact opposite. So as a base it was ok. No more than that.

Stayed here as one of our first places on our Costa Rica tour. Good size room and powerful shower. The rooms had an area in front to sit out and watch the rainforest! The rooms have no windows just fly screens so you can hear all the sounds of the rainforest. Lovely place to immerse yourself in nature. We saw so many animals around the complex and also during our rainforest tour and also the national park tour by boat. we had a guide called Ray who was fantastic and he made our first time in Costa Rica so enjoyable. He went above and beyond and even took us to see a Boa Constrictor and a red eyed tree frog! The whole place is clean and relaxing, the pool area is lovely and there is also a rainforest trail to go and explore. Food was good, buffet style and good selection.
