The housekeeper was very nice :( She will clean our room asap once we leave and top up everything that we have used. The receptionists on the other hand were not so friendly. Its true that the location is very creepy with all the youngsters hanging out while smoking/drinking outside but never once we feel threatened by the surroundings. I stayed for 7 nights on way to see family in OZ from the UK, my reason for choosing Sakura Ikebukuro was that I was stopping off to see my daughter who is doing a year at nearby Rikkyo University. The first thing is to say that there were very helpful reception staff who spoke good English. It's on a reasonably quiet street (for Tokyo). I stayed in a single room, there was a sign in the lobby that no visitors are allowed in rooms. I have no experience of Japanese hotels and was told they are generally very small, but this was fine, the bed was probably a small double, so generous for one. There was no cupboard space but some hooks on the wall to hang clothes, but that wasn't an issue for me. Below the window was a large shelf (with TV that I didn't use) and sockets to recharge my devices. There was an ensuite and the shower was over a small bath but plenty of hot water and good pressure. I took the breakfast option in the cafe across the road that was cheap but basic, thick white toast with butter and jam and coffee. You could buy yourself an extra boiled egg if you wanted one. I think my rating overall was a 4.5 but as that's not an option I've gone for the full 5 on the basis of how friendly and helpful the staff were. Overall good value for money for the single traveller.

The hotel has a very central location. The Yamanote line is a 10 minutes walk away. I think the hotel affords a lot of comfort and relaxing for couples and families but business travelers as well..
