Nayara Alto Atacama

Nayara Alto Atacama

San Pedro De Atacama|2.81km from city center
Nayara Atacama transformed a random “let’s go to Chile to see the stars” trip into a venerable once-in-a-lifetime experience. Rooms, grounds, facilities, and amenities are comparable to the most exclusive hotels in the world. Six outdoor swimming pools, indoor and outdoor eating areas, bar and lounge, and immaculately maintained premises and pathways all contribute to a sense of welcome. The level of service is exceptionally and uniformly high. The van at the airport had our names and greeted us accordingly. That is the start of the personalized service that permeates throughout the facility: guests are greeted respectfully by name, the staff making eye contact. Tiny details, like the waitress remembering every day how my wife prefers her coffee prepared in a peculiar manner. The staff has been carefully vetted and intensively taught on how to perform their duties to perfection. Food is excellent, goes without saying. Ditto for the wine pairings. Of course: this is Chile. Sensible portions, fresh ingredients, creative combinations, cheerfully colorful presentation, pasta al dente (minor detail which shows meticulous attention to everything). Interesting to note that pre-check in form asks about allergies and food preferences. The kitchen noted ours before arrival (like my intense dislike of and aversion to cilantro) and respected them at every meal and picnic throughout the stay. The mention of the picnics brings us to the excursions. Nayara Atacama offers a veritable cornucopia of excursions. Some are half-day; others are full day; ranked by level of physical difficulty. The excursion manager meets with the guests upon arrival, presents the options, makes suggestions (like slowly adapting to the elevation of each destination), and we are presented with a detailed spreadsheet covering all the excursions selected for each day, time of departure, and what to wear. Important: temperatures range within the day from freezing to baking-desert-hot. Nayara Atacama sends its guests on the various excursions in a private van, ranging from 2 to 8 people, with a dedicated driver and a guide. The guides are very well versed in the purpose of the excursion (glaciers, salt flats, geology, archaeology, etc.) and eager to share their enthusiasm for the region and its features. One can safely say that each excursion is like a concentrated, mini course on one topic. Ah yes, the picnics. Some excursions include a picnic, either because the excursion leaves at 5:30 am, in which case breakfast is prepared and served on the road; or because it is an all-day excursion with lunch included. Arriving at the designated spot, the driver and the guide open the back of the van. Out come a folding table, tablecloth, napkins, wine glasses (remember, I told you, this is Chile), and cutlery. While the guests loiter around, the driver and guide COOK the meal in situ, with ingredients the kitchen sent for this particular excursion, based on our preferences. Freshly made scramb

Our Habitas Atacama

San Pedro De Atacama|0.76km from city center
I had a lovely stay at Our Habitas Atacama. This is an absolutely beautiful place, with a vibe that whispers family and community in the best way possible. The staff were so incredibly friendly and helpful— in a way that made me feel like they were my friends and not performing their “duties as staff.” I had such a wonderful stay… I booked a chakra alignment/massage/energy work with Valesca and felt TRANSFORMED afterward. It was one of the best massages of my life. She was absolutely incredible. I arrived early (well ahead of check-in) and Carolina, one of the front desk staff, was so sweet. She did everything in her power to get me to a room as soon as possible, which was a BEAUTIFUL room with a rooftop terrace for stargazing in the evening. I never wanted to leave the property, actually, even though there are so many wonderful things to do in Atacama! All staff were super attentive and friendly— other highlights included Oscar, one of the most charming and knowledgeable staff I have met at any hotel, anywhere; Cristobal, the community manager who scheduled my wellness visit and I now feel like is one of my friends; Camila— who shared a super secret stargazing spot on the property; Sebastian, Kenny— you were both wonderful, too! I have read from other guests’ reviews that they thought the rooms were uncomfortable and hot— I went during record heat and when I requested a fan, it was in my room within 15 minutes, and it was quiet! Additionally, I found the beds to be incredibly comfortable and the rooms delightful. But most of all, what I would love to return to is this idea that at Habitas, you feel genuinely cared for and a sense of friendship and family. I would definitely book again.

Inti & Killa Hostal

Inti & Killa Hostal

San Pedro De Atacama|0.66km from city center
Pros: -Spacious room that was impeccably clean. -Fridge in room -Friendly staff -No AC not necessary as cool during the day and sufficiently warm (with blanket provided) at night. Of note, we were there during the month of March. Cons: -Wi-fi in the reception area but no Wi-Fi in the room -Hot water was spotty. If you ran the shower long enough, you would usually get hot water...but one hates to waste water, especially in the desert. -Breakfast was lackluster and did not change from day to day (rolls, jam, butter, cereal, powdered milk, ham, cheese, one fruit). One day they ran out of food. Although, it seems that breakfasts at hotels in San Pedro are generally not great. Other: -Staff don't speak much English but if you know a little Spanish, you will be fine. -Staff very nice but reception was not always staffed and it could be a nuisance to track someone down. -Parking is outside during the day. At night, they recommend bringing the car inside the compound given the dust at night. If staff was not around, it was a pain to find someone to unlock the parking area to bring the car in/out. -There is a small pool but we only used it once for about 10 minutes as whatever chemicals they use to treat the water caused the eyes to burn. -No hairdryer or Kleenex in the room. If you anticipate needing either, bring your own. -Slightly out outside of town. Not an issue for us as we had a car. Giving it 3 stars due to the hot water issue, no wi-fi in room, and difficulty tracking down staff at times. If none of these elements are important to you, then you will be happy here.

Hotel Cumbres San Pedro de Atacama

A super beautiful small resort where many European and American tourists live. The hotel has complete facilities, rich breakfast, and the small travel agency and restaurant are very good, and you can stay for a day without going out. There is a car to the center of the town every half an hour. At night, looking at the night scene in the yard to see the starry sky is really amazing. The stars in the sky are super beautiful. I have never seen such a beautiful starry sky after going to dozens of countries. The most distinctive hotel on this South American trip, highly recommended!
Hotel la Casa de Don Tomás

Hotel prices are high in San Pedro de Atacama so we chose this simple hotel which suited our budget. The main thing that stood out about this hotel is how genuinely friendly and accommodating staff and management are. They offer a very good breakfast with a large choice of what looks like home made cakes and pastries. Free excellent coffee (and teas) are available day and night and I liked their filtered drinking water dispensers as it saved us buying bottled water and is eco friendly. What we didn’t love, and hence only four stars, is that there is a lot of noise from the courtyard which doubles as driveway as well as from the hallways within the building - you can hear everything and as many people have early starts our sleep was disturbed countless times. If I chose to stay here again I’d pay a little extra for a premium room as they are neatly tucked away far from the main entrance and street. Another negative point is that the rooms get very hot during the day and with the lack of air conditioning it’s nearly impossible to get the heat out of the rooms. All in all we still had a good time here especially because of the friendly and helpful staff.

Positive points: There is a very nice, wide, hot water, well served breakfast and very well located.Negative points: It smells xixi cat in the outer areas, does not offer hair dryer, does not offer snarks when you have a very early trip. We arrived from the Sakar crossing of Uyuni around the midday, tired and wearing heavy clothes because we left early in Bolivia with cold and the attendant reported that we could only get into the accommodation at 15 a.m. When we questioned the need to change clothes because the weather was very hot, the swimming pool was offered and we could leave our bags at the reception. I felt uncomfortable to be opening the bag in front of other guests and out with clothes in the hands of the hotel. I also reinforce that since the hotel offers leave msg with the arrival forecast, this should not occur. I can only say that we came into the accommodation later and just before 15:00, but I had already felt very uncomfortable and shameful about the situation. Another comment: the window window: it is possible that the person who is outside see who is inside when the light is open, without privacy.
Rey Lagarto Hostel
4.3/510 Reviews
The check in was smooth. I as a non-Chilean didn't need to pay the extra taxes. It's 1.5km from centro, but that's not a big problem. I walked back and forth to centro, and I felt safe even at late night. The room was ok. The bunk bed was sturdy. There were 3 living areas: indoor, roofed outdoor, and rooftop. Rey Lagarto has the typical international hostel vibes and services. The major room for improvement was the wifi, which was slow and unstable. I'm not sure if this was about the geography of Atacama.
Terrantai Lodge

OH MY GOSH! Don't stay anywhere else in San Pedro. Terrantai is easily one of the best places I've ever stayed (and I've stayed in 150+ hotels). The attention to detail, the location, the STAFF!! All so so so incredible, especially Moisés, he is truly the best. The breakfast served every day is ”simple” but amazing, with fresh-to-order eggs, fresh croissants baked every morning (yes, I had 2 per day), fresh squeezed oj, and plenty more. There's snacks and tea every afternoon, wine ”tastings” (aka glasses) every night, free parking in a secured lot about a block away, hot showers, fast wifi..I think you get the point. NOTE: there is no A/C, but it's the desert, nights are cold and honestly it's not needed. I'm usually the type of person to filter places to stay on having ”A/C” first, so don't let the lack of A/C deter you! We left our room door open for an hour or so before going to bed to let the cold air in with the fan on and slept wonderfully! There's not really any bugs in Atacama to worry about, so we also slept with our window open for more fresh cool air. Terrantain, THANK YOU. We loved it here so much, I know it won't be my last stay
