Myself, adult daughter and her American boyfriend checked in for a two night stay. The double with a single bed was in a small but tidy old fashioned/car at the door unit. Large fridge, small microwave, and exactly three pieces of cutlery. Two small bottles of plastic water were in the fridge. No obvious place to recycle these which was disappointing for a beach side community. Three regular size towels. 2 small soap. I small tube of shampoo/conditioner and one small tube of body wash. The rooms are not serviced daily and the room information states it may be done for an additional charge. There is a 20% discount at a pub/restaurant/pokies 700 meters down the road. No close shops or stores. Beach across the road. Shoreline not visible due to natural vegetation. While old, with windows that did not quite close and a toilet cistern that ran some water in between flushes the basic room was serviceable for our needs. After a 5 hour drive, my daughter who has masses of very curly hair that gets very hot and sweaty, had a shower and used my towel for her hair. When it was my turn, I asked my daughter to request an extra towel from Sheree at reception. Daughter returned to room that was across from office and stated Sheree was coming over. Sheree barged in without knocking and loudly said “Have you got more than three people in this room?!” Clearly we did not. I was shocked. The entire room was clearly visible except for the bathroom which has no privacy lock in any case. The extra towel was handed over when I replied that my daughter had used the towel for her hair. On checkout, Sheree was next door, making pleasantries with the couple next door. I approached her and offered our key. Not a single pleasant word was said by Sheree. Not a word. I am not sure why this woman was so unpleasant to us. My daughter is bi racial and her American boyfriend is Latino. Anyone can have a bad day but Sheree managed her inhospitable hostility throughout our stay. Lastly, we stayed out of school holiday season but the vast majority of guests appeared to be retirees. Perhaps, this is Sheree’s preferred clientele. However, as a car is required for basic provisions and activities other than the hotel pool and dog beach across the road, I am not sure The Hervey Bay Hotel would suit anyone requiring more than a modest room for the night. Certainly, I will not recommend this hotel to anyone I care about.
