The Astor Hotel Motel

Stayed for 1 night for a sporting event with 12 yr old son. My husband had previously stayed with our children in the downstairs rooms and said they were clean, tidy and renovated. This stay we staying in a room upstairs, it had a walkway directly across from our door to the hotel itself. We were horrified once we opened the door. My 12 yr old actually stated he would rather sleep in the car. The room was in such a poor state. The single bed was actually on the floor, no wheels. Plastering had been done but not sanded or painted. The furniture looked like someone had been to Vinnies and bought very poor second hand stuff. We ****** it up as it was late check in and went to the team dinner, upon arriving back things got so very loud. There was music blasting from the Astor, when i called i was advised that they had a private function directly located in front of our room and "sorry it will be finished by 1 am ) after this at 1 am the guests from the Astor and the establishment across the road were yelling and carrying on after a great time. The bathroom has an open roof/cavity covered only by a plastic Grid so you heard "everything" i mean when they got a text message and when they went to the toilet from next door. We were beyond exhausted the next day, my son played sport all day and then a 5 hr drive home. We jokingly told everyone we were at the "Bates Motel" - But i guess that's our fault not realising how cheap and nasty it was. The shower is weirdly updated to a roof shower head then the soap holder right on that wall, you can't move without scraping your arm. So much space yet unusable. The towels smelled like Cigarette smoke also. The towel holder was broken. The only thing i must say is their cleaners- although the room is horrible, if you look past that all they must work hard to make things as clean as they were. I would only recommend this room to Tradies, as its really a shabby old pub room. It would have been nice for the pics to be realistic or be told the upstairs are pub style upon check in- not really nice for kids at all.

We arrived around 4 pm on a Saturday and all the basic motel rooms were booked out. So we paid a little extra and got a suite, it was worth it lovely room, great shower, warm - minus 2 overnight, quiet . Nice bistro bar friendly staff would recommend

The last time I stayed in a room so badly presented was in 1972 in Angola during that country's civil war. But. hey, this is 2023 in Goulburn, Australia. If $130 for a pet friendly room gets you this, then leave your dog with your in-laws. Plaster flaking off the walls, floor tiles broken, dark dirty shower, no exhaust fan in the toilet/shower room, electric wire (hopefully disconnected) hanging from the wall.

This was one of the few cheaper motels to have a vacancy, we were given a twin room,it was clean, reasonably sized close to food outlets, only down side was we were in late afternoon about 6pm there was no parking left ,had to park out on the street, otherwise all good , staff were very friendly

That old saying 'sounds too good to be true' actually rings true with our experience at this property. We should have trusted our instinct so partially our fault. So we booked the room online. Photo's looked good, place looked clean and reviews were overall quite good. We arrived and were told we actually booked a room upstairs from the pub on the opposite corner apparently. Obviously an overflow situation for sucker traveller's. That's okay because it was cheap and we're open minded after all. Open minded that is until we saw what we booked....apparently. No photos of this room on the website so somewhat misleading. Very misleading actually. To describe this shoebox sized, putrid at first sight, 'pay by the hour' looking room as horrid is an understatement. Back to reception we go and it turns out we can pay an additional fee to stay in the property we actually booked. Worth noting if you book to stay at the Astor you could potentially end up sleeping upstairs Tattersall Pub across the road. At this point we're told we couldn't cancel and get a refund because we booked online via a 3rd party. Sorry gents, my partner is a hotel manager of 35 years and we call BS but anyway we pay the extra money and get a really shabby alternative but a huge improvement on the pub room. Our faith is now somewhat restored until that is we head to the supermarket to grab a few supplies, arrive back only to find 2 male strangers sitting on our beds. I'm not kidding. They were upset that we walked in on them and had even moved our luggage to make way for theirs. So back to reception we go. 15 minutes later we were literally instructed to remove our bags and proceed to 3rd attempt at finding a place to stay, coincidentally an upgraded room. Awesome, we can finally settle in for the night. Nice enough room sure. Obviously recently underwent some upgrades. Wreaked of fresh paint, new carpet, fitted out with cheap furniture, some quirky modern touches, original circa 70's bathroom mostly but it was an upgrade so we'll take it thanks. Quickly learned can't put feet on the new carpet because it was riddled with ants travelling in via the carpark. Anyway, if it sounds too good to be true, trust your instincts and if you need to stay in Goulburn, avoid this property at all costs. You're welcome
