Hotel Jan Brito

Bruges|0.39km from city center
We stayed here for 3 nights and had room 32 which was upstairs, with one window overlooking the garden and another (the bathroom) overlooking the rear street of the hotel. The room was immediately accessed from the lift (literally one step away). First impressions of the hotel in general were great - Jan Brito, converted to a hotel from a grand house in the 1990s, certainly retains its C16th feel with high ceilings and original features. The owners have taken care to maintain its unique heritage. Pluses were the location, the quietness of the hotel, pleasant staff and the size of the bedroom (much bigger than normal) & the roomy, modernised bathroom which included a shower, a separate bath and a good magnifying mirror. Both rooms had plenty of storage space. The bed was spacious, firm and had clean linen. TV had BBC 1 & 2 - a bonus abroad! Breakfast was fine with good choices of cooked and cereals/continental breads etc in lovely dining area, though the self-service area was small so I can imagine it being difficult to negotiate during busy times. Minuses in Room 32 - the shower was lukewarm and had nowhere to put soaps/shampoo so you were bending all the time (I advise taking a shower gel with a hook). The bedroom was quite dark without lights on and needed refreshing. TV straddled 2 pieces of furniture, for example, and I was worried the bathroom handle would drop off, lovely as it was! On balance, I'd definitely recommend the hotel as a place to stay but would opt for a different room. PS: Our bathroom overlooked a small cafe/bagel bar which was popular/vegan friendly & looked enticing. Handy supermarket round the corner for water etc.

Ibis Brugge Centrum

Bruges|0.79km from city center
I’ve recently returned from a holiday in Belgium during which I spent three nights staying at the less than impressive Ibis Brugge Centrum. Due to travelling with a friend I didn’t stay at the hotel in Bruges where I stayed when visiting the city in November 2022 and unfortunately stayed here at the Ibis instead. We arrived and checked in just after 3pm. I hadn’t been in my room long, and was just sorting out my luggage before going out, when the bedroom door was opened and a man walked in, the hotel had given my room to a second person. The man went off to reception to get a different room and I followed shortly after to complain about the error. The staff on reception were casually apologetic but told me that these kinds of errors had been happening since a new computer booking system was installed and treated the who issue as though it wasn’t a big deal. I’m aware that implementing new computer systems are never without problems, but in a hotel I would have thought that trying to ensure that the room booking system doesn’t issue a room to multiple people is a pretty basic requirement. As a woman travelling alone it is not a pleasant experience to be in a hotel room and have a stranger walk into the room, it would have been terrifying if it had happened when I had been in the shower or bed, and for the remainder of my time in Bruges I never felt relaxed when in the hotel room. After making my complaint to reception I returned to the room to find that the key card no longer worked. This happened again on my second day at the hotel after a day of sight seeing, and after my previous experience left me wondering if the room had been allocated to someone else while I was out. Even without the experience of the room being allocated to someone else I wouldn’t be planning to return to this hotel; the shower ran cold more than hot, the bed was not comfortable with the mattress feeling like it needed to be replaced, there were only two sockets in the room, one of which was partially blocked by the curtain rail (due to the room being on the top floor the ceiling sloped near the window and the curtain was weirdly hung at an angle), there was mould on the wall beneath the hooks in the bathroom and just a general need for refurbishment. My friend spent the first night in the hotel unable to sleep due to deep vibrations which she assumes were from a nearby generator. The floor was literally shaking. She changed rooms for the remaining two nights of the stay and got the impression that she wasn’t the first person to have complained about the noise problem in room 211. Positives are that the hotel is easily walkable from the train station (although you will be dragging your suitcase over cobbles) and breakfast was a reasonable spread.

Radisson Blu Hotel, Bruges

Sint-Michiels Bruges|1.57km from city center
Decent location if you want to be near the train station and don’t mind a short walk to the town. Access to the hotel on foot is slightly confusing at first as you have to go through a large car park, but it is very close. We stayed for 2 nights. Generally staff we interacted with during the stay were polite and friendly. They were happy to answer questions and help us book a restaurant. The common areas of the hotel are lovely and modern. Free lemon water is provided in a dispenser in reception along with Biscoff lotus biscuits. The bar is nice for a drink before heading out for dinner. The room wasn’t huge but ok given we were going to be out most of the time anyway. No robes or slippers were provided - which we have had in other 4 star hotels in Europe. Also, the plug socket on one side of the bed didn’t work. The room has a nespresso machine (though only disposable paper cups are provided). Although the machine did the job, the plastic tank where the water goes was cracked and there was no lid. Someone needs to regularly go around all the rooms and check everything is in good order. The shampoo/shower gel products are lovely and they do actually provide bath salts which many other hotels don’t. But we had to give feedback regarding the cleanliness and replenishment of toiletries. The floor in the room and bathroom needs to be vaccumed properly as I could see there were a few crumbs and things (when we first entered). When I asked about this they said it gets done before new guests check in but not daily thereafter. The tissue box in the bathroom had one or two scrunched tissues sitting on top of it(?) Just fill the actual box up! This hotel isn’t a bad option for Bruges but don’t go in with super high expectations. As we were there for a short trip we didn’t get too hung up on things but really the attention to detail in respect of the rooms needs to be improved for the price.

Hotel Bliss

The hotel was clean and the staff so friendly and helpful. It was an ideal location for a city visit. Breakfast was something inconceivable and the same daily. The eggs of the wheel were unfortunately complete. Fresh fruit was little available, even cereal breads were not there. Sometimes cereal bread. A big shortage was the rumble right in front of the house and our room. Although the hotel cannot do so, we were not told when booking. Although we spent 7 nights there, no other room was offered back, although many people spent only one or two nights there. This daily noise source until 23:00 or partly until 24:30 was already extreme. I expected more support from the staff here.
Dukes' Arches Brugge Adults Only

Having stayed several times at the Dukes Palace, Bruges, and this being a sister hotel, I expected a similar standard. It's not. Reception staff cold, unfriendly and frankly, unhelpful. Booked a parking space, but one had not been reserved for me (there's only four parking spaces at the hotel - and one of those was being used by the hotel manager). Was told I would have to leave my car in a public car park. I did not want to do this for security reasons. Having visited Bruges around 20 times, I am fully aware that parking is extremely limited, hence the reason I booked the car park. They had no record of me booking the car park (booked through Hotels.com) and did not have any spaces available (if I had been the hotel manager, I would have offered to move my car for my guest - the fact that this didn't happen tells you everything). I took it upon myself to pop over to its sister hotel, the Dukes Palace, and explained my situation. The staff there were very helpful and said I could park my car in their car park. Why couldn't the receptionist at the Dukes Arches arrange that? Absolute zero customer service. Bar area, whilst very nicely appointed, completely lacked atmosphere, despite being quite busy. Breakfast service was good. Staff within the breakfast room were very helpful and friendly. Courtyard room lacked a courtyard view (please see photo). Bed was very comfy. I was concerned about the low water temperature in the bathroom (I'm familiar with legionella) and reported this to the reception staff. Met with a shrug of the shoulders! Be aware that with the ground floor courtyard rooms, there is a corridor off the car park to access these. The external door does not closely very well and with cars coming and going, the corridor fills with car exhaust fumes. Overall, very disappointed. I will be coming back to Bruges (fabulous place), but will never stay at this hotel again.

Have stayed several times at the hotel. Brilliant location for visiting Bruges. Just a short walk to the main square but very quiet. Great they have safe parking as well just a short walk away. The rooms are lovely and comfortable and very clean. The staff are incredible. Best service I have received in a hotel for many years. It was a very good experience from booking. Communications were quick and very informative. The breakfast was beautifully presented and very tasty. Would never stay anywhere else when I come to Bruges. We went to celebrate a birthday which they made special. Natalie and Isabelle certainly know what customer service means.

When we arrived at the location we interphoned and the door opened automatically. We left the bags at the hotel we went to walk. When we returned at the end of the day there was a packet with the number of the room. The next day we interphoned to make the payment. The hotel is in the centre, I found it a little dust, perhaps because of the dynamics of operation.

Starting with the positives: 1. It was clean 2. The ladies in the breakfast room were lovely and friendly. 3. Breakfast was limited, but reasonable for the cost of the room. 4. The beds were comfortable, up to a point. 5. Towels were changed daily. 6. There was a lovely view. The negatives: 1. There was no seating in the room apart from the bed. So the view was harder to enjoy. 2. No tea or coffee facilities in the room. 3. Storage was 2 clothes hangers on the door. 4. No shower gel, etc., just a small soap bar. 5. The heating was limited to 19°. There was a €150 euro fine if you increased the temperature, or you could pay €50 per day for additional warmth. 6. The bathroom arrangements were not the best if you were a couple on their first trip together - fortunately, we weren't. 7. The decor in the room was tired. 8. The corridor was missing parts of the laminate flooring. 9. Everything such as tea, coffee, hairdryer, and toiletries came at an additional cost. 10. The list of rules that came with the room felt oppressive and unwelcoming. Overall Experience: It was a budget hotel, and I have no problem with that being reflected in the standard of accommodation. However, when you have flooring missing, limits on heating temperature, regardless of the temperature in the room, and no basic provisions, it feels less like budget and more like contempt for the customer. The rules came across as draconian and unreasonable. The tiny pillows? Couldn't they stretch to normal size pillows? Or not charge for extra? Yes, it was advertised as having an unstaffed reception, but when there's so little effort being put into making you feel welcome anyway, it just seems to reflect a general lack of care for the customer, rather like the missing flooring. The breakfast room ladies were lovely, though.
