First built in 1954 and renovated in 1978, the Provincial Museum offers insights into the 50,000 year old history of Guangxi. The 13-thousand-square-metre museum boasts a collection of more than 500 bronze drums, most of which are cultural relics of the local minority groups. Some of the local minorities regard drums as a symbol of power and only prestigious people can possess a drum.

The museum also exhibits costumes, artifacts, such as musical instruments, masks and puppets of the 12 minority groups in Guangxi province. In the back yard of the museum, there are also several samples of the distinctive architecture of the minorities. Other major exhibits of the museum include the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) Exhibition and Guangxi Culture Exhibition.
