Overview

Nanjing, one of the six ancient capitals of China, is situated at the south bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It is the capital of Jiangsu province, covering an area of 860 square kilometers with a population of more than 5 million.

Nanjing is a city with grave memories. Various ancient dynasties have taken Nanjing as their capital, built their glories, flourished their riches, and then vanished through the flow of history, leaving merely palaces or tombs to be dated back nowadays. A Dream of the Red Mansion, a famous classical Chinese novel, tells the flourish and downfall of a grand family in Jinling. Many of the descriptions reflect the luxurious life of the people in noble families.

Nanjing is a city where great political changes have taken place in modern history. Before the establishment of People's Republic of China, Nanjing was the political and cultural center of China. On December 13th 1937,the invading Japanese troops entered Nanjing and went on to kill more than 300,000 people. It is still associated with bitter memories in many minds. The Japanese had committed a notorious massacre which can never be forgotten or forgiven by the city of Nanjing.

Nowadays, Nanjing is a peaceful city, with tree-lined streets, hills and lakes, making the intense heat of east China's summers somewhat endurable. Meanwhile, one can enjoy the peacefulness of the city with utmost loneliness.
