Overview

Travelling south along Hainan's east coast from Haikou to Sanya, you will pass through Wenchang, Qionghai, Wanning, and Lingshui. This area, the Typhoon Corridor, gets an abundant amount of rainfall that makes Hainan's east coast a green, lush paradise. Typhoons are most frequent in the summer and this, in part, is why Hainan has developed as a winter vacation destination for other Chinese.

Culturally, eastern Hainan has less Li and Miao populations and is definitely more Han Chinese. In addition to mainland Han Chinese, overseas Chinese from neighboring Asian countries, such as Malaysia and Indonesia have returned (especially during the 50s and 60s) to reestablish homes in eastern Hainan, especially in the Xinglong area in Wanning, an area famous for its coffee and hot springs. These returning Chinese have also brought back some of their expatriate lives with them, making the area a cultural mix of Southeast Asian cultures.

The east coast of Hainan boasts hot springs, beautiful beaches and nature parks. Hot springs like Guantang Hot Springs are a fantastic example of eastern Hainan's wonderful resort areas. Another great spot is the Dongjiao Coconut Forest near Wenchang where you can enjoy a splendid view of white beaches and the deep blue sea, while enjoying some delicious seafood cuisne.
