Lugu Lake (Lugu Hu in Chinese) is a pristine lake located some 190 kilometers from the city of Lijiang, on Yunnan's northern border. Lugu Lake's shores are home to peoples of the Mosuo minority group, who for centuries have lived in a matriarchal society. Luoshui and Lige are two of the larger villages inhabited by the Mosuo, but there are many more smaller villages around the perimeter of the lake.
Dotted over the Lugu Lake are 5 small islands, some of which are large and rich with bird life, other are no more than rocky protrusions. Lugu lake's deep blue waters may seem inviting, but if you're keen for a dip, remember that the lake is more than 3500 meters above sea level, and consequently bone-chilling cold.
Lugu Lake is a little out of the way and it is recommended to allow two days for a complete trip.
Ctrip's recommended itinerary:
Day 1: Take bus to Lugu Lake from Lijiang, visit Lugu Lake and Mosuo Village in the afternoon. Stay at Lugu Lake (Luoshui Village) where you can stay in traditional Mosuo lodgings.
Day 2: Take a boat tour of Lugu Lake and visit the islands, take a bus back to Lijiang.
